Studia Orientalia Tartuensia, Series Nova (S.O.T.S.N.) is a peer-reviewed academic series dedicated to advancing interdisciplinary research in Asian studies. Published by the Centre for Oriental Studies of the University of Tartu in cooperation with the University of Tartu Press, the series combines rigorous scholarship in classical studies, linguistics, and history with theoretically informed analyses of contemporary social, political, and cultural processes across Asia. It provides a platform for contributions that engage closely with primary sources, languages, and historical contexts, while situating regional case studies within broader analytical and comparative frameworks.

S.O.T.S.N. particularly welcomes work that transcends disciplinary boundaries and critically addresses complex, interrelated phenomena, including geopolitics, religious practices, media and digital environments, and regimes of knowledge production. The series is open to individual submissions as well as proposals for thematic volumes and special issues, encouraging collaborative and conceptually coherent contributions that advance emerging research agendas.

By fostering sustained dialogue between philological, historical, and area-based expertise on the one hand, and comparative, theoretically grounded approaches on the other, the series aims to contribute to the development of Asian studies as an analytically robust and methodologically plural field of inquiry.

The series is published in print and open access.

S.O.T.S.N. is published by the Centre for Oriental Studies of the University of Tartu in cooperation with the University of Tartu Press.

History

Studia Orientalia Tartuensia was founded in 2003 by Linnart Mäll (1938–2010), that time head of the Centre for Oriental Studies at the University of Tartu. Mäll also was the first editor-in-chief of the new series. Its predecessor was the Oriental Studies Series of the Acta and Commentationes Universitatis Tartuensis where six volumes were published in 1968–1981. The new series was established to publish thematic volumes in a wide range of Oriental studies, led by the next head of the Centre and editor-in-chief Märt Läänemets. In the years 2003-2020, seven volumes were published (S.O.T:S.N. I-VI and VIII).

The fifth volume of the Studia Orientalia, Series Nova contains a survey of the scholarly work of Linnart Mäll (1938–2010), the founder of Buddhist and Oriental Studies in the University of Tartu, by Märt Läänemets – Linnart Mäll’s Contribution to Mahāyāna Studies –; and Linnart Mäll’s own last four papers from the years 2005–2009: Worship of Written Scriptures as a Basis for the Development of Mahāyāna; Quotations from Mahāyāna Sūtras in the Works of Thinkers of Nālandā; Perspectives of Buddhism in the European Union and Especially in Estonia; Tibetan Translations of the Mahāyāna Sūtras and Their Role in World Culture.
In third part three articles by the students of Linnart Mäll are published: Towards a Theory of ‘Awakening Conduct’ (Reflections on the Gaṇḍavyūha-sūtra) by Märt Läänemets; Some Remarks on the Bodhisattva in the Lotus Sūtra by Teet Toome; and On the Possible Connections between the Evolution of Mahāyāna Buddhism and the Development of the Canon of Buddhist Iconic Art by Leho Rubis.

This Festschrift is dedicated to Professor Tarmo Kulmar on the occasion of his 65th birthday. The volume contains 23 papers from Tarmo Kulmar’s friends, colleagues and students. The papers cover quite an extensive field of religious studies from archaeology and source text analysis to modern religious trends, politics, and the methodology of religious studies. All these are areas to which Professor Kulmar has contributed a great deal over more than 40 years of academic study.
